Step Off

StepOffX400Step off the scale. Whatever you do stick to for a diet, it can’t be stressful.  You have to know your limits. If you have had a history in the past with anorexia or bulimia, then you can’t watch the scale everyday. Many overweight people have struggled with these dietary illnesses at some point. Be ok with admitting to yourself that having a scale is too stressful.

Why is stepping off the scale important for everyone? By checking everyday, you might see you lost a whole 2 pounds in one day and say, “Oh, I can have a candybar or a soda.”  You might also see you gained a pound or two and panic.  Now you have sent your brain into stress mode and your hormones say, Oh no! and then hold on to even more weight or psychologically you give up or even fall into the anorexia or bulimia mind track.  You just can’t allow it.  Our recommendation…choose a day of the month to check your weight.  For us it is the first day of each month.

So where do I check my weight if I don’t have a scale.  Find a scale somewhere out there that you have access to that you can always go to on the first day of the month.  We chose the Health Smart monitor in Wal-Mart, but they have these in CVS, Walgreens and other pharmacy and grocery stores. We like that we can have it all tracked and see our progress as well as check our blood pressure and track it too all in one stop on a regular basis. If you don’t want to use one of these, maybe you keep a scale at your church or friend/relative’s house where you can go and ‘check-in’.  This needs to be someone you trust, won’t let you come check at every turn and can be encouraging.  They probably don’t need to be someone struggling with their weight.

Can I not weigh myself at home?  We are not saying you can’t check your weight at your own house, But our plan includes throwing your scale out of your house.  It has had too much control over you…obviously.  It is a temptation you don’t need! Even weekly checking might be too much.  You have to just relax and stick with the program and expect results. My first weigh in, after a month, I was terrified, truly shaking in my boots-no joke!  I was afraid I would not see any results because I had been trying for years with no results and I was not on that exercise regimen anymore.  Before we went on this I had given up and was walking just for my heart…not what I would call trying.  It didn’t seem to matter what I did, my weight stayed the same.

Secret

SecretX400So what’s the secret?  It’s not really a secret.  It’s really just eating healthy.  The problem is, we don’t really know what healthy is. We have too many people telling us this and that and we think it takes too much time to eat well. So instead we try eating this and just this for breakfast and/or lunch and then a ‘sensible’ dinner.   Don’t buy into it.  Can you really do that for the rest of your life?  I can’t. No way!  I tried.

Journey

RoadToHealthyStreetX400Everyone has to find their own journey to success in being healthy.  For my husband and I, we wanted to be healthy and thought we were doing pretty good on trying to eat moderately and taking care of our bodies, but each year we just kept gaining weight.  We tried that Green drink and that just gets old, we tried a variety of juicing for breakfast everyday, but we weren’t real fond of it and I tried running myself with exercise for years consistently and always pushing to the next level, but just didn’t see results in the weight loss side.  I just don’t think exercise or counting calories is the answer.  This was our conclusion on a 19 hour drive home from Christmas Vacation on December 26, 2015.

So what is the answer?  In our case, we began to talk about everything we had learned in our journey over the years.  We have watched documentaries on food, been grossed out by things we have read and seen, studied about the effects of sugar on the body and how it effects your gut and teeth, and I had attended nutrition counseling here and there as well as expert advice from trainers.  None of them could figure out why I wasn’t losing wait. My husband could lose some weight with the ‘programs’ but then it just came right back on. While not grossly overweight, we were both on the charts considered obese.  We are still on this journey, but after just 3 months I am sold that this will stay with me and I will never gain the weight back again.

Believe it or not, it was our conversation about what we learned through studying our own personal finance through Dave Ramsey’s podcasts, leading Financial Peace University and working over the years to try and have financial freedom that we truly just wanted freedom in how we eat and our whole attitude and perspective about food.  Much of where our choices about what goes into our dietary budget is a culmination of everything we have taken in and learned from books, documentaries, online articles and podcasts, but we haven’t been able to find anything out there combining it all into something quite like ours.  I won’t lie. It takes commitment, it hurts, but really doesn’t require exercise.

Exercise is great for the heart, but it is hard to exercise very much if you are too overweight and your joints are not real happy with you. Trust me I really did work out and hard.  I tried cardio 4 days a week every week for a year and a half.  Even in the cold, cold rain, I ran. I started with a walk/run that built up to running  a full 6 miles in about one hour and 15 min.  I was never out there less than an hour. Slow, yes…but I was pushing myself.  I tried aerobics for several years always participating 3 days a week in a facility for an hour.  But what about circuit training…combining cardio with weights. Yes. I did that too. People in circuit training with me, called me the Energizer Bunny.  And… I even tried hot yoga.  Man was that relaxing and energizing, but I still didn’t lose weight.

As you lose weight and eat better…the overweight foggy brain clears away and you can focus more and have the energy.  You might find yourself doing that project you kept hoping to get around to but were always too tired.

Boundaries

Boundaries are essential. You have to have boundaries when it comes to food. Boundaries means there are territorial lines that you don’t cross. In order to rid yourself of weight for good, you have to build boundaries that you can live with. A couple of things have to happen to have boundaries. First you need to draw those lines. Second, you must defend them and most importantly as with country boundaries, we have to have checkpoints. Checkpoints allow us to check and make sure crossing the boundaries we have set are ok or if our boundaries need stricter lines or defended more fervently.

Titus 2: 11-12 “For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age”

Boundaries are a type of self-control. Self- control is godly and upright and not having boundaries with food is ungodly and we are handing ourselves over to worldly passions. Save passion for the bedroom. God designed that to be good and to not hold back from our spouse.

A big question I get is “What are the boundaries for the Real Normal Diet? Remember that we have checkpoints so there are times to allow yourself to cross these lines but they should be completely controlled yet giving yourself some grace. We all need grace and relief from time to time but only in small-limited portions. Remember a key to success is finding replacements for those cravings.

Here it goes. No bread, No corn, No Processed Sugars, No Soda, No store-bought fruit/vegetable juice, No cheese, No yogurt, No rice, No potatoes, and No items with ingredients made in a lab like high fructose corn syrup, partially hydrogenated oils, margarine, Splenda or other chemically formed things, I just can’t call them food.

What always comes next is so what can I eat? All the vegetables, fruits, fresh juiced juices you juiced yourself, Lean Meats, Eggs, Water, Tea, and beans that you want. There are some things to limit like Sausage, lunch meat, and butter. Butter is so much better than margarine, but eating sticks of it is not ok.
